Here is an inspiring TED talk that causes me to reflect on why I do what I do for my profession. As a little background on myself, I completed a Masters degree in Teaching English to Speakers Other Languages (TESOL). I have taught English in the U.S. and in various countries around the world. In addition to teaching English with the intention of helping individuals improve the quality of their lives, I have discovered another passion in my current position as the Curriculum Director at Reading Horizons: Literacy. A colleague introduced me to this TED talk by Simon Sinek entitled "How Great Leaders Inspire Action." It is worth 18 minutes of your time to watch and reflect on why you do what you do.
I am fortunate enough to work for a company that has a vision of helping individuals to improve the quality of their lives and helping them reach their potential by unlocking literacy for struggling readers. To get a little taste of the vision shared by the employees at Reading Horizons, watch the video below. Over all, I think as a company, we have been able to embrace the concept behind Simon Sinek's quote from his TED Talk: “If you hire people just because they can do a job, they’ll work for your money. But if you hire people who believe what you believe, they’ll work for you with blood and sweat and tears."

ReplyDeleteI had a Superintendent and Principal forward me this message from a Kindergarten Teacher and Team Leader recently. I told her this is why I do what I do!
"Hello: I got the nicest phone call this morning. Alicia Decol’s grandma, Lyndia LeCours, went out of her way to call me from work this am to tell me that she loves the way I have taught her granddaughter to phonetically decode words. Also, the books she bought for her that she couldn’t read, she is now able to read them independently. I think more credit should be given to Discover Intensive Phonics than me but those are the strategies I taught her…I feel I helped Alicia grow so much with reading! Just wanted to share some good news. Happy Thursday.
